Payday Super is live: is your payroll keeping up? Brick Road Accounting checklist for employers

Since 1 July 2026, the way employers pay superannuation has changed. Under Payday Super, you no longer have until the 28th day after the end of the quarter. Your employees’ super now needs to reach their fund within 7 business days of each payday. With the October quarter deadline on 28 October no longer the finish line it used to be, now is a good time to check your payroll process is keeping pace before the Christmas rush.

What changed

Super is now due with each pay run, not in a quarterly lump. The contribution has to be received by the employee’s fund within 7 business days of payday (there are some extra allowances for things like a new employee’s first payment). Paying late can trigger the Superannuation Guarantee Charge, which includes interest and an administration component, and late contributions are not tax deductible. The SG rate remains 12%. Four things to check now

  1. Your payroll software is Payday Super-ready. Xero, MYOB and other STP providers have updated their super processes. Confirm yours is set up to pay on each pay run, not quarterly.
  2. Your employees’ fund details are correct. A rejected or misdirected contribution can make you late. Make sure every employee has current fund details or a stapled fund on file.
  3. Your cash flow plan. Super used to sit in your account for up to four months. Now it leaves every pay cycle, so wages-plus-super needs to be budgeted per pay run.
  4. Your clearing house. If you used a clearing house for super payments, check that your current arrangement can deliver payments within the 7-business-day window.

The 28 October BAS still matters

Your September quarter BAS and PAYG withholding are still due on 28 October. If you lodge through us, we will already be on it. If you are a self-lodger, put it in the calendar now.
